Jan Philipp Sendker Books in Order

Jan Philipp Sendker was born in Hamburg in 1960, and he knew early what he wanted to do. At thirteen, he wrote a school essay saying he wanted to write novels. He finished school, skipped university, and went straight after that dream, which turned out to be harder and slower than he had imagined.

At first, he kept getting stuck. He began novels with energy and good ideas, then ran out of road after twenty pages or so. He even moved to Paris for a time, hoping a new city, a new language, and a different rhythm of life might shake something loose. It did not, at least not right away.

Journalism became the long way around to fiction.

Back in Germany, he worked as a freelance journalist until the weekly magazine Stern hired him as a reporter. In 1990 he moved to New York as its US correspondent, and in 1995 he went on to Hong Kong as its Asia correspondent. Those years gave him a wider world, and they also gave him the kind of sharp, lived-in detail that later shows up all through his novels, especially the ones set in Burma and China.

He eventually made room to write in a more serious way. After saving money and working up the nerve, he took unpaid leave and wrote The Art of Hearing Heartbeats in a small farmhouse in upstate New York. The novel was not an instant success, so he went back to journalism for a while. Three years later, he left that job for good and committed himself to fiction full time.

That stubborn start matters.

Many readers first meet him through The Art of Hearing Heartbeats, a Burma-set novel about family secrets, endurance, and a love story that reaches across years and distance. He followed it with A Well-Tempered Heart and later The Heart Remembers, books that stay in the same emotional world while widening the family story. Readers who connect with these novels tend to like their quiet intensity, their tenderness, and the way Sendker writes about love and grief without rushing either one.

His other major thread is darker and more outward-looking. In Whispering Shadows and The Language of Solitude, he moves into suspense, following Paul Leibovitz through Hong Kong and mainland China as personal damage collides with corruption, political pressure, and old historical wounds. Across all of Sendker's work, certain things keep returning: people trying to rebuild after loss, families marked by silence, and private lives bent by larger events. That interest also shows up in The Long Path to Wisdom, his collection of Burmese folktales and fables. His books have been translated into more than thirty-five languages, and he has lived with his family in Potsdam, Germany. He has said, in typically plain terms, that he loves telling stories, making things up, and daydreaming. After a long detour through reporting, travel, and false starts, he ended up exactly where that thirteen-year-old said he wanted to be.
