Author bio
Jamie McFarlane writes the kind of science fiction that remembers people still have to pay bills, fix engines, and argue with their friends even when aliens are on the way. Much of his work lives where space adventure meets blue-collar grit, with heroes who win less through destiny than through stubbornness, loyalty, and a willingness to keep going when the job gets ugly.
He publishes under a pseudonym, something he has explained as a practical way to keep his writing life separate from his professional one. That choice says a lot about the shape of his career. Writing was not a sudden reinvention for him. It grew alongside the rest of life, in evenings, on weekends, and in the hours he could protect for storytelling.
Storytelling was already there, though.
McFarlane has said he was the family storyteller as a teenager, the one spinning big yarns out of ordinary moments. He has also pointed to classic science fiction writers such as Robert Heinlein, Larry Niven, and Jerry Pournelle as lasting influences. You can see that mix in his books. He likes capable people under pressure, believable systems, and worlds where technology matters, but so do friendship, courage, and plain old hard work.
His best-known universe is Privateer Tales, which begins with Rookie Privateer and follows Liam Hoffen from an asteroid mining colony into a much larger life among pirates, traders, soldiers, and alien threats. Readers who stay with the series usually stay for the crew as much as the battles. The ships matter, but so do the family ties, the rough humor, and the constant search for a place that can finally feel like home.
That idea of found crew shows up again and again in his work.
In Junkyard Pirate, he takes a worn-out Vietnam veteran and drops him into an alien conflict that is much bigger than the hero ever asked for. In Wizard in a Witchy World, he swaps starships for hidden magic and gives readers Felix Slade, a modern wizard caught between witches, werewolves, visions, and his own dangerous power. In When Justice Calls, he turns toward a grounded thriller about former Ranger Henry Biggston and a fight against traffickers and organized crime.
McFarlane has also branched out without losing his core interests. He teamed up with Rachel Aukes for the Space Troopers books, a military science fiction trilogy built around twins, academy training, and corporate tyranny. He moved into game-inflected fantasy with Drakon Prince. More recently, he launched the lighter and funnier Spaceship Mechanic novels, starting with Boltguns and Duct Tape, where a veteran mechanic ends up solving galaxy-sized problems with tools, duct tape, and a lot of bad luck.
He has spoken pretty plainly about what matters to him in fiction. He likes protagonists with believable faults, and he puts real thought into antagonists who have motives beyond simple evil. That helps explain why even his bigger, wilder stories tend to feel lived-in. The setups can be huge, but the people inside them usually feel practical, human, and a little frayed around the edges.
Whether he is writing space opera, urban fantasy, or a small-town thriller, Jamie McFarlane keeps coming back to capable outsiders, patched-together teams, and worlds where courage often looks like showing up for the job one more time. And with newer books like Jump Drives and Coffee Stains and Ray Guns and Late Fees, he is still building fresh corners of the galaxy, still chasing the next problem for his crews to solve.
