Author bio
Jamie Mason was born in Oklahoma City and grew up around Washington, DC. That mix of a capital-city childhood and a sharp eye for the stories people tell themselves shows up in her suspense fiction, where ordinary homes and relationships can hide very complicated problems.
She has said she is more interested in the why of a crime than the identity of the culprit. Her books follow people under pressure, then stay close as secrets, bad choices, and old loyalties begin to catch up with them.
Her first novel, Three Graves Full, arrived in 2013. It begins with Jason Getty, a seemingly mild man who has buried the victim of a murder in his own backyard. When police uncover two different bodies on his property, Jason has a problem that is both stranger and more dangerous than the one he thought he was hiding. The book moves between a worried killer, a missing fiancé, an odd collection of strangers, and local detectives trying to make sense of the mess.
Nothing stays buried for long.
In Monday's Lie, Mason shifts to a marriage coming apart. Dee Aldrich has tried hard to build a normal life with her husband, Patrick, despite a childhood shaped by her mother Annette, a covert operative who taught her memory tricks and spy games. When Dee begins to suspect that Patrick knows more than he should, she has to decide which lessons from her past are useful and which ones are still controlling her.
The Hidden Things takes its spark from an unsolved art theft. Fourteen-year-old Carly Liddell fights off an attack at her front door, and the short security video of her escape spreads online. A detail caught at the edge of the frame points toward a stolen Dutch Golden Age painting, pulling Carly, her stepfather, an art dealer, and a violent enforcer into the same dangerous search.
The people in these books do not get easy answers. They make assumptions, protect the people they love, and often discover that the version of events they trusted was incomplete. Mason keeps the stakes personal even when the plot reaches into crime, money, surveillance, or a long-ago theft.
Her stories also make room for uneasy humor. A terrible situation may be absurd as well as frightening, and a character's small, human reaction can matter as much as the next clue. That balance is part of what readers tend to enjoy in her work.
Mason lives in the mountains of western North Carolina with her husband and two daughters. Away from the page, she has listed films, Formula 1 racing, football, travel, reading, and the equally appealing pleasure of staying home among her interests.
For readers who like suspense built around motive, family secrets, and people trying to outthink consequences, Mason's novels offer a good place to settle in.
