Author bio
James O. Born grew up in the West Palm Beach area of Florida and studied at Florida State University before earning a master's degree in psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi. Long before he was publishing thrillers, he was working cases, learning how people talk under pressure, how agencies really function, and how messy an investigation can get once real lives are involved.
He started in law enforcement with the DEA during the Miami drug war, then moved to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. There he worked undercover, handled investigations involving narcotics, organized crime, public corruption, and violent offenders, and spent years on the agency's Special Operations Team. That kind of background gave him something many crime writers have to fake.
That background never really leaves his fiction.
Born did not jump straight from police work to a writing career. He spent years advising other writers and television productions on realism, including Elmore Leonard and the TV adaptation Karen Sisco. In interviews, he has said that working the job made a lot of crime fiction feel too neat or too theatrical, and that pushed him toward writing books that sounded more like the world he knew.
Then Elmore Leonard gave him a push.
His first published novel, Walking Money, came out in 2004 and introduced Bill Tasker, a Florida investigator trying to stay upright while greed, bad luck, and institutional nonsense crash together around him. The book was a Barry Award finalist, and the early Tasker novels, especially Shock Wave and Escape Clause, helped define Born's lane: funny in a dry way, grounded in procedure, and very alert to the small absurdities inside serious police work.
He kept stretching after that. The Alex Duarte books, Field of Fire and Burn Zone, lean into federal investigations, bombings, and wider national threats. Scent of Murder slows the tempo just enough to focus on a deputy and his K-9 partner, and it shows another side of Born's work, the bond between cops, families, and the job that keeps barging into both. Under the name James O'Neal, he also wrote near-future thrillers, which makes sense for a writer who likes systems, politics, and pressure points as much as he likes chases.
In 2015 he began his long collaboration with James Patterson. That partnership put him on the Michael Bennett books and later on projects like Haunted, Ambush, Lost, and the Mitchum stories. Even in those broader commercial thrillers, readers tend to notice the same Born traits, believable law-enforcement detail, investigators who feel tired but competent, and danger that comes as much from bad institutions as from obvious villains.
Off the page, he has stayed busy in ways that sound almost suspiciously energetic. He has run the New York and London marathons, holds two black belts, and has worked on television and documentary projects, including the PBS film Send Me, which brought him an Emmy. During his law-enforcement career he also received several service awards, and he was given a Life Saving Medal after helping rescue a family from a vehicle in a canal.
He still lives in Florida with his wife, Donna, and writes full time. If you pick up a James O. Born novel, whether it is a solo Florida crime story or a James Patterson collaboration, you can usually expect sharp procedural detail, fast movement, and characters who carry the job home with them.
