Author bio
James Craig was born in Scotland and has spent much of his working life in London. Before crime fiction took over, he worked as a journalist and TV producer, jobs that left him with a sharp eye for power, spin, and the small details that make public scandals feel real. That background shows up all through his novels, which are less interested in tidy puzzles than in the messy overlap between politics, policing, money, and ego.
Writing fiction was not a straight line for him.
He has said that after years in journalism he wrote a history of Greenpeace for a French publisher, then started trying his hand at novels. The first attempts did not go anywhere. Life moved on, work got in the way, family took up space, and for a while the idea was parked. When he came back to it in his forties, he felt more settled and more sure of what he wanted to do. That second run stuck.
The breakthrough was London Calling in 2011, the first Inspector Carlyle novel. From the start, Craig had a clear sense of the kind of detective he wanted. John Carlyle is not a glamorous genius or a wrecked antihero. He is a working London cop, tired, stubborn, sometimes irritated, often outnumbered, and still willing to keep pushing when easier people would stop.
London matters in these books.
Readers who come to Craig for the Carlyle series usually stay for the setting as much as the cases. Buckingham Palace Blues, The Circus, Dying Days, Into the Valley, and The Taste of Blood all use the city in a very grounded way. Parks, police stations, government offices, expensive addresses, shabby corners, and familiar landmarks all sit alongside gangsters, politicians, journalists, and fixers. The pace is quick, but the real hook is the sense that everyone is working an angle.
He also likes tired men in bad systems.
That is true of Carlyle, but it stretches across Craig's wider work too. He moved away from London for the Berlin based Max Drescher books, which trade Westminster grime for a city still dealing with the aftershocks of division. He has also written harder-edged thrillers such as Acts of Violence, set in China, and the Daniel Hunter novels A Shot At Salvation and The Sweetest Morsel, which lean more toward international action. Different settings, same interest in pressure, compromise, and what people will do when institutions stop being much help.
What readers tend to like most is the mix of movement and bite. Craig's books are fast without feeling flimsy. He is good at corrupt hierarchies, awkward loyalties, and the way private life keeps colliding with public trouble. Family matters. Old friends matter. So do grudges, favors, and the fact that doing the decent thing rarely comes with a reward.
He has lived and worked in London for decades, and that long familiarity gives the books their lived-in feel. Even when the plots get large, with trafficking rings, political cover-ups, or international criminals, the stories stay close to street level. A lot of crime writers talk about their city almost like a character. Craig usually does something simpler and better. He makes it feel like a place people actually have to get through, one bad day at a time.
