Author bio
James Bowen was born in Surrey, England, on March 15, 1979. After his parents split up, he spent much of his childhood in Australia with his mother and stepfather. The family moved often, school was difficult, and he has spoken openly about being bullied and feeling like he never quite settled.
By his late teens he was back in Britain, but life did not suddenly get easier. He spent years sleeping rough or moving through hostels and sheltered housing in London. He also struggled with heroin addiction and mental health problems, and for a long time he was focused on the simplest question possible, how to get through the day.
Then, in the spring of 2007, a ginger tomcat appeared in the hallway of his building in Tottenham.
Bowen was in a methadone programme then and earning money by busking and selling The Big Issue around Covent Garden and Angel. At first he assumed the cat belonged to someone else. But the animal stayed put, had an infected leg, and clearly needed help. Bowen got him treatment, took him in for what he thought would be a short stay, and ended up with a companion who refused to leave. He named the cat Bob.
That meeting changed the course of his life. People noticed the pair on the street. Bob rode buses, sat on Bowen's shoulder, and drew crowds wherever they went. Videos spread online, a literary agent got interested, and Bowen was introduced to journalist Garry Jenkins. Together they turned the story into A Street Cat Named Bob, the book that made both of them famous.
Readers usually come to Bowen's work because they love cats, but the books land because they are about much more than that. In A Street Cat Named Bob, The World According to Bob, and A Gift from Bob, he writes plainly about recovery, cold streets, tight money, public attention, and the small routines that can keep a person going. Bob is charming, yes, but he also becomes a reason to stay steady.
He kept writing.
Bowen also brought the story to younger readers. Bob: No Ordinary Cat and For the Love of Bob retell the memoirs for children, while My Name Is Bob and Bob to the Rescue turn Bob into a picture-book hero. Later, The Little Book of Bob gathered the lessons Bowen felt he had learned from living alongside such a calm, stubborn, street-smart cat.
Across all of these books, the themes stay pretty consistent. Second chances matter. Kindness matters. So does being seen when the world would rather look away. Bowen's London is not a shiny postcard version of the city. It is buses, pavements, shelters, cold weather, and the odd bit of luck that can change everything.
The story also moved onto the screen, with A Street Cat Named Bob adapted for film in 2016 and A Christmas Gift from Bob following in 2020. Bob appeared as himself, which feels fitting. Bowen still lives in London, and his name remains closely tied to causes involving homelessness, literacy, and animal welfare. That suits the books well. For all their warmth, they were never only about a famous cat. They were about finding a way back into life.
