Where should I start?
If you want his flagship LitRPG apocalypse: Cataclysm → Crimson Alliance → The Jade Lord
If you want urban fantasy first: Strange Magic → Cold Hearted → Wendigo Rising
If you want a dungeon-core antihero: Rogue Dungeon → Civil War → Troll Nation
If you want monster-school chaos: Year One → Year Two → Year Three
If you want monster hunting with guns and leveling: Vigil's Justice → Vigil's Valor → Vigil's Balance
Author bio
James A. Hunter was born in Denver, Colorado, and he writes the kind of fantasy that moves fast, hits hard, and still finds room for a joke at exactly the right moment. His books jump between urban fantasy, LitRPG, progression fantasy, and monster-heavy adventure, but they tend to share the same engine. Drop a capable person into a bad situation, add magic or systems or both, then see how they fight their way through it.
He has had a less-than-boring life.
Hunter describes himself as a former Marine Corps Sergeant, a combat veteran, and even a pirate hunter. He has also spent time as a missionary and international aid worker in Bangkok, Thailand. That mix of military experience, travel, and dark humor helps explain why his stories often feel grounded even when the setup is wild. The monsters may be huge, the gods may be angry, and the game rules may be absurd, but the people inside those stories usually sound like they know pressure when they see it.
By the middle of the 2010s, he was publishing fiction full time. His early breakthrough came with Strange Magic, the opening Yancy Lazarus novel, which introduced readers to a bruised, blues-loving mage with a fixer streak and a talent for attracting supernatural trouble. Not long after that came Cataclysm, the first Viridian Gate Archives book, where Hunter shifted into LitRPG and post-apocalyptic virtual fantasy. That series became one of the centerpieces of his career and opened the door to a much bigger shared world.
That bigger world matters.
A lot of Hunter's best-known books play with game logic without forgetting character. In Rogue Dungeon, a hedge mage from another world gets trapped inside a game as a troll and turns that bad hand into a full-on monster uprising. In Bibliomancer, written with Dakota Krout, the hook is stranger and more playful, with Sam King stumbling into Eternium and winding up on a book-based magical path that gives the story its own offbeat flavor. In Vigil's Justice, Hunter leans into monster hunting, divine powers, guns, and leveling systems, while Discount Dan shows how willing he is to go weird when a premise makes him laugh.
Readers usually come to Hunter for momentum. They stay because he is good at building pressure. His heroes are often soldiers, medics, strugglers, or outsiders who do not get much time to stand around and admire the scenery. They have to choose, adapt, and keep moving. Across series, he returns to a few favorite ideas: found family, loyalty under stress, power with a cost, and the question of what survives when the world changes faster than people can keep up.
He also likes giving different corners of a setting their own feel. The Viridian Gate books can be big and war-driven. Yancy Lazarus is rougher, funnier, and more supernatural-noir. Shadowcroft Academy for Dungeons turns toward monster-school comedy and dungeon-core chaos. Even when the subgenre shifts, though, Hunter's voice stays recognizable. Clear stakes. Lively banter. A taste for monsters, misfits, and sharp left turns.
These days, Hunter writes full time, spends time with his family, and runs Shadow Alley Press, the publishing company tied closely to much of his fantasy and LitRPG work. He has also described himself as a stay-at-home dad who writes while taking care of his two kids.
That sounds about right. Busy on the page, busy off it.
