Soon the crisis reaches the International Space Station, and Jake is pulled into a dangerous effort to figure out what is happening before astronauts die and the damage spreads. It is a short book, but it sets the tone well. Smart problem solving, rising scale, and danger arriving from strange directions.

Contact Us widens everything. An alien craft appears, a bizarre global event hits humanity, and the future of the species starts depending on what one deeply unsettling visitor really wants. Jake is dragged back from hiding because he is good under pressure and because ordinary officials are badly outmatched. The book plays with catastrophe, alien motives, and public panic, but it still keeps Jake grounded as the person trying to think clearly while everything around him gets more absurd.

Then The Universe Next Door changes the frame again. Jake is pulled into a parallel Earth where dinosaurs never went extinct and spacefaring dinobirds rule the planet. He is stranded there with almost nothing, plus his dog and his elderly grandmother-in-law, and the problem somehow gets larger than the last one. Getting home may depend on stopping a threat that reaches across multiple universes.

What makes the series work is the contrast between scale and attitude. The threats are enormous, but Jake is not a swaggering action hero who loves the spotlight. He reads more like a dry, reluctant fixer. Macy likes pairing giant ideas with odd domestic details, bits of humor, and the simple fact that even the person saving the world still has to deal with other people, family baggage, and very bad timing.
