Series background & context
The Jacobite Chronicles Story sequence is a companion series that explores the early lives of key figures from the main Jacobite Chronicles. Each book stands alone, but together they build a rich web of backstory that deepens later events.
The opening novel, The Whore's Tale: Sarah, begins in a small Cheshire village in 1731. Reverend Browne has already decided that his daughter Sarah will spend her life caring for him and his parish, but one chance meeting offers escape and sends her into a much harsher world than she ever imagined.
The Eccentric's Tale: Harriet steps back to the seventeenth century and into the life of Harriet Ashleigh, the eldest daughter of a duke who wants only one thing, the freedom to be herself. When family duty and financial pressure close in, she makes a choice that sets her at odds with polite society and forces her to fight for survival on her own terms.
In The Ladies' Tale: Caroline & Philippa Harriet is in her late forties, wealthy, powerful and happily unconventional, living apart from her disapproving relatives. An unexpected visit brings shy Philippa into her orbit, while Caroline, the sheltered daughter of a duke, goes looking for the mysterious aunt no one will discuss, setting off changes neither woman can control.
The later volumes follow Alex MacGregor long before he appears in the main saga. The Highlander's Tale: Alex and The Baronet's Tale: Anthony Parts I and II trace his upbringing in the outlawed Clan Gregor, the harsh education his father demands, his years studying in Paris and the difficult choices he faces once he becomes clan chief and is drawn into dangerous ventures.
Taken together, these stories shift the camera away from battles and princes to show how villagers, aristocratic women and young clan leaders are shaped long before the main rebellion erupts, making the series ideal if you enjoy deep character work alongside immersive historical detail.
