Jack MacTaggart Books in Order

The Jack MacTaggart books are legal mysteries with a wisecracking lawyer at the center, set largely in Southern California. Jack is not the sort of attorney who can quietly handle a file, bill the hours, and go home. He is sharp, skeptical, and drawn to people who have been dismissed, blamed, or pushed into a corner. That instinct keeps putting him near murder, political gamesmanship, family secrets, and people with a great deal of money to protect.

Before the series begins, Jack worked as a deputy public defender in Los Angeles. A controversial acquittal in a gang case still follows him, especially because the defendant later killed an LAPD detective. The fallout gives Jack a fraught history with homicide detective Tom Parker and adds pressure whenever Jack's cases cross into criminal territory.

In Hush Money, Jack joins the old, status-conscious Pasadena firm Henley & Hargrove and is assigned what seems to be a routine insurance claim. A socialite's champion show horse has died under suspicious circumstances, but the inquiry leads him into professional show jumping, a buried blackmail scheme, and murder. It establishes the series' mix of legal procedure, social satire, romance, and a protagonist who keeps talking when prudence might suggest otherwise.

Each later book sends Jack into a different corner of California power. Green-Eyed Lady puts him in the middle of a Senate race after a candidate is caught in a compromising scandal involving a stolen painting. The Last Heir moves the action to Napa Valley, where a wealthy wine family's fight over inheritance becomes deadly. In The Chimera Club, Jack takes on the defense of a financier whose DNA appears to connect him to a Los Angeles murder he could not have committed.

The cases change, but the questions stay familiar.

Jack has to sort through competing stories told by clients, cops, political operators, wealthy families, and rivals who know how to use the press. His legal training is useful, but it never gives him the whole picture. The books get much of their tension from the gap between what can be proved in a courtroom and what Jack suspects happened behind closed doors.

Pasadena and Los Angeles are more than backdrops here. The series pays attention to the contrast between polished wealth and the messier business underneath it, whether the setting is a law firm, an equestrian club, an art world scandal, or a Hollywood-linked homicide. Napa expands that world without losing Jack's outsider perspective.

Start with Hush Money, since it introduces Jack, his past, and the relationships that continue through the later novels. The mysteries are self-contained enough to work on their own, but reading in order gives the strongest sense of Jack's professional life, his friendships, and the baggage that refuses to stay buried.
