Author bio
J. Robert Janes was a Canadian writer whose long route to fiction ran through engineering, geology, teaching, textbooks, and travel writing. Born in Toronto on May 23, 1935, he grew up in a home where books and art mattered. His mother loved mysteries, and that early exposure stayed with him.
Before he wrote crime novels, Janes trained and worked as a mining engineer and geologist. He also taught geology, geography, and mathematics, including work at Brock University. Research, fieldwork, and explaining complicated ideas clearly were part of his working life long before he became known for fiction.
In 1970, he made writing his full-time job.
Janes first wrote nonfiction, including books and educational material about geology. His background gave him a practical feel for landscapes, weather, travel, and the physical details that make a setting believable. He also wrote novels for younger readers, beginning with The Odd-Lot Boys and the Tree-Fort War and continuing with mysteries such as Danger on the River, Theft of Gold, and Murder in the Market.
Those early books helped him build a career around suspense. His adult work includes the Richard Hagen novels, World War II thrillers centered on an Antwerp diamond dealer drawn into dangerous work against the Nazis. In The Alice Factor, Hagen uses an Alice in Wonderland-based code while moving through a Europe on the edge of war.
Then came the books most readers associate with Janes.
Beginning with Mayhem in 1992, the St-Cyr and Kohler mysteries pair Jean-Louis St-Cyr, a French police inspector, with Hermann Kohler, a German detective working under the Gestapo. Their uneasy partnership takes them through occupied France, where ordinary murder cases become tangled with rationing, collaboration, black markets, resistance networks, and the machinery of war. The setup is inherently tense: these two men work for opposite sides of an occupation, yet neither is willing to ignore a violent crime.
Across novels such as Carousel, Kaleidoscope, Salamander, Sandman, Madrigal, Bellringer, and Clandestine, Janes moved his detectives through Paris and beyond, using places like Lyon, Avignon, Vichy, Alsace, and the Dordogne. Readers who return to the series often come for the cases, but also for the difficult friendship between St-Cyr and Kohler and the moral pressure of their wartime world.
He kept writing about the Second World War outside the series, too. The Hunting Ground follows a French survivor after the war, while Betrayal, The Sleeper, and The Little Parachute explore espionage, family, loyalty, and survival from different corners of Europe.
Janes died on February 28, 2022, at age eighty-six. He left behind a varied body of work, but the thread running through it is clear: curiosity about people under pressure, and a strong sense that place, history, and small details can turn a mystery into something much bigger.
