J Mark Bertrand Books in Order

J. Mark Bertrand is a writer whose books cross a line many authors keep separate. He has written about Christian thought and then built hard-edged crime stories around a homicide detective. His bibliography moves from discussions of worldview and culture to cases set on Houston's streets.

Bertrand earned an MFA in creative writing from the University of Houston and lived in Houston for fifteen years. The city became the setting for his Roland March novels, giving the series room for affluent neighborhoods, rougher streets, police offices, churches, and the daily sprawl of a major Texas city.

His first book in print was the 2007 nonfiction work Rethinking Worldview. Rather than treating a worldview as a list of answers to memorize, the book considers how beliefs are formed, lived, and expressed. It also reflects Bertrand's work teaching theology and culture at Worldview Academy.

That foundation stayed with him when he turned to fiction.

In 2010, Bertrand joined historical-romance writer Deeanne Gist for Beguiled, a Charleston-set mix of romance and crime. The two had met in a Houston critique group, and the collaboration let them combine a dog walker's growing danger, a reporter's interest in the story, and a developing relationship.

That same year, Bertrand introduced his solo crime series with Back on Murder. Its lead, Houston homicide detective Roland March, is tired, burdened by what the job has cost him, and far from a tidy hero. A missing teenager's high-profile case gives him a reason to keep pushing, even as his work and home life are under strain.

The later March books widen the pressure. In Pattern of Wounds, a new killing looks disturbingly like a case March thought he had solved years earlier. Nothing to Hide begins with the body of an undercover agent and leads March toward federal pressure, a possible cover-up, and memories connected to the reason he became a homicide detective.

These are not cozy mysteries.

Bertrand's fiction makes room for faith without making Roland an easy spokesman for it. Church communities, skeptical questions, grief, marriage, responsibility, and the urge to see justice done all sit beside the evidence gathering and police work. The books are interested in what violence does to the people left to investigate it.

Biographical notes say Bertrand and his wife left Houston for South Dakota after one hurricane too many. It is a small detail, but it fits the practical, lightly wry tone that shows up around his work. For readers, his books offer two clear paths: reflective nonfiction in Rethinking Worldview, and a three-book Houston procedural that follows one detective through increasingly personal cases.
