The Italy books follow Annie Hawes as she stumbles, almost by accident, into a new life in Liguria. With Journey to the South: A Calabrian Homecoming, the series opens out beyond Liguria. Annie travels south with Ciccio and his lively extended family to see the Calabrian homeland they have talked about for years. That gives the books a fresh angle. Instead of simply learning Italy as a foreigner, Annie starts noticing how different one Italian region can be from another, and how identity inside a family can be as complicated as identity inside a country. Calabria brings more relatives, more food, more argument, and a new set of local codes to decode.

Taken together, these books are best read as warm, clear-eyed travel memoirs rather than glossy escape stories. They are full of olive terraces, kitchens, village talk, and comic misunderstandings, but they also keep returning to work, money, belonging, and the long slow business of fitting in.
