Ishmael Jones Books in Order

The Ishmael Jones books are Simon R Green's take on the classic British murder mystery, only with a strong paranormal undertow and a lead who is very much not ordinary. Ishmael works in the shadows, first for the mysterious Colonel and later for a wider secret organization. He investigates uncomfortable truths, deals with dangerous people, and has one overwhelming rule for survival, never attract more attention than necessary.

That gets harder once bodies start turning up.

Most of the books use enclosed, pressure-cooker settings that feel pleasantly old-school, isolated manors, remote houses, private trains, country gatherings, or scientific teams cut off from easy escape. Ishmael arrives, studies the room, dismisses the first dramatic explanation, and starts asking who had motive, means, and enough nerve to do the killing. Green has a lot of fun with apparently supernatural setups, haunted houses, mummies' curses, black holes, standing secrets, ghost stories, and then lets Ishmael worry at them until the human truth starts showing through.

Penny, Ishmael's partner, becomes an important part of the series. She is lively, curious, and much better company than Ishmael would ever admit at first. Their back-and-forth gives the books warmth, and it helps balance a protagonist who is often deliberately guarded. Because Ishmael is guarding more than his emotions. His own past, and his not entirely human nature, sit under the whole series and gradually become harder to ignore.

That longer thread is what lifts the books above simple puzzle mysteries. Yes, each novel has its own crime and closed circle of suspects. But taken together, the series is also about identity, secrecy, and what it means to keep living under an alias when your real history still has claws in it. Later books lean more openly into that personal arc without giving up the pleasures of the murder investigation.

If you want Green's imagination in a tidier mystery format, this is a very good choice. The books are shorter, cleaner, and more classically structured than some of his fantasy series, but they still have his love of hidden worlds, sharp reveals, and one more strange detail in the corner of the room that should not be there at all.
