Author bio
Simon R Green was born in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, on August 25, 1955. He studied humanities at Thames Polytechnic and later earned an M.A. in modern English and American literature from the University of Leicester.
He started writing while still a student in 1973. His first sale was the story Manslayer in 1976, and his first full-length work, Awake, Awake, Ye Northern Winds, followed in 1979.
Then the long apprenticeship ended.
After a stretch of odd jobs, including work as a shop assistant, actor, and freelance writer, Green hit a remarkable run in the late 1980s. He sold a cluster of novels in quick succession, and in 1989 he was commissioned to write the novelization of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, a book that reached a very wide audience and helped put his name in front of many new readers.
What kept readers coming back was range. He could write huge, blood-splashed space opera in Deathstalker, turn around and deliver fairy-tale fantasy in Blue Moon Rising, then head straight into dark London for Something from the Nightside.
He likes mixing things that are not supposed to go together.
In the Nightside and Secret Histories books, readers get private eyes, occult spies, monsters, bad jokes, family feuds, and end-of-the-world stakes, often all in the same story. Later series like the Ishmael Jones mysteries, beginning with The Dark Side of the Road, show another side of his work, classic British murder puzzles with a strange and uneasy edge. Even when Green changes genre, he tends to keep the same energy, fast dialogue, sharp turns, and characters who sound tired of the world but keep fighting anyway.
That shared-world instinct became one of his signatures. Different series brush up against one another, names recur, old legends echo forward, and longtime readers get the pleasure of seeing separate corners of his fiction connect without any one series losing its own identity.
His books also return again and again to a few things he clearly enjoys, hidden Londons, dangerous families, bad institutions, and heroes who would honestly prefer a quiet life but never get one. There is usually a lot going on, but underneath the monsters and mayhem, Green is often writing about loyalty, betrayal, duty, and the price of carrying on when things have already gone badly wrong.
Green still lives in Bradford-on-Avon, the town where he was born. After decades of writing science fiction, fantasy, horror, and mystery, he has built the kind of bibliography where a reader can enter almost anywhere and quickly see the appeal, big ideas, fast pace, a very British sense of humor, and a willingness to throw one more impossible problem at the hero just when things were already bad enough.
