Series background & context
The Instinct novels by James Patterson and Howard Roughan pair criminal behavior expert Dr. Dylan Reinhart with NYPD detective Elizabeth Needham. Dylan brings an academic understanding of how people think and act; Elizabeth brings the experience of investigating real crimes. Their partnership begins when a killer makes Dylan's work part of a murder scene. Understanding a criminal is no longer an exercise he can keep within the boundaries of a classroom or a book.
The first novel, Instinct, was originally published as Murder Games. These are two titles for the same opening story. A copy of Dylan's book appears alongside a threatening message, creating a direct connection between his professional work and the crime. Elizabeth recruits him to help interpret another object found at the scene: a playing card. Further killings and further cards make the pattern more urgent.
The cards may be warnings about victims who have yet to die.
That possibility gives the investigation a different pressure from simply reconstructing a completed crime. Dylan and Elizabeth need to work out what the killer is communicating quickly enough to prevent another death. The murderer becomes known as the Dealer, and publicity contributes to the fear spreading through New York. Dylan's expertise is useful, but it does not automatically tell him how to turn an interpretation into protection for a person in danger.
Killer Instinct brings the pair back together after an Ivy League professor is murdered. Their combined abilities again seem well suited to finding the person responsible, but a devastating attack on New York expands the crisis. A name from Dylan's past appears among the victims, threatening the life he has built and the distance he thought he had put between himself and earlier events. The investigation thus demands both professional reasoning and a reckoning with information he would prefer to leave buried.
The city is central to the series because a private clue can become a public emergency, with police work unfolding under pressure from headlines and frightened residents. Across the books, the recurring interest is the distance between knowing about criminal behavior and coping with someone actively exploiting that knowledge. The tone is an adult crime thriller, combining investigation, psychological puzzles and danger to the investigators themselves. Read Instinct first and Killer Instinct second to follow the development of Dylan and Elizabeth's working relationship. Their different approaches give the partnership its shape, while each case tests how far expertise can take them when the threat is personal as well as professional.
