Inspector Crambo Books in Order

Inspector Crambo appears in only two Julian Symons novels, The Narrowing Circle and The Gigantic Shadow, but the pair gives a good sense of where Symons was heading in the 1950s. These are not cozy detective stories and they are not showcases for a glamorous master sleuth. They are tense, modern crime novels in which pressure falls hardest on compromised, ambitious, or self-deceiving protagonists while Crambo closes in from the edges.

That point is worth keeping in mind, because the series label can suggest a more detective-centered experience than the books really offer. In The Narrowing Circle, the main tension comes from an ambitious man whose rival dies and who quickly finds himself under suspicion. In The Gigantic Shadow, the focus shifts to Bill Hunter, a television personality living behind a public mask and hiding an ugly past. In both novels, Crambo is important, but he is not the whole show.

He is the pressure, not the performance.

Crambo's role is to narrow the field, test excuses, and make it harder for other people to keep lying. He is not flashy, and Symons seems to like him precisely for that reason. Against characters who are performative, frightened, or hungry for status, Crambo feels solid. He brings procedure, patience, and the blunt fact that the world does not stop just because someone would prefer their private fantasy to go on a little longer.

These books are darker in mood than the early Inspector Bland novels. The settings are modern and uneasy: offices, media culture, public image, class strain, and the shabby edges of success. Symons is already moving away from the neat old puzzle and toward crime fiction that cares about false identities, emotional damage, and the ordinary humiliations that can tip into violence.

That shift is the real link between the books.

So even though there are only two Crambo titles, they make sense together. Both are about people whose lives are already unstable before murder or scandal pushes them over the edge. Both are interested in the gap between what a person shows the world and what they are trying not to face. And both use Crambo as the steady force that strips away pose.
