Outside In
by Maria V Snyder

After exposing the truth about Inside, Trella finds herself tangled in fragile new politics instead of slipping unseen through the pipes. When sabotage and strange attacks threaten the cube, she must uncover whether the danger comes from bitter insiders, something from Outside, or both.
Inside Out
by Maria V Snyder
2010
Trella is a maintenance scrub in a cramped metal world of pipes and levels, skilled at sneaking through ducts and avoiding the brutal Pop Cops. Asked to find proof of a fabled Gateway to Outside, she stumbles into a rebellion that could upend everything Inside.
Series background & context
The Inside Out series is set in a place simply called Inside, a maze of metal levels, pipes, and ventilation shafts where no one remembers what lies beyond the walls. Society is split between scrubs, who live in cramped lower decks and keep the machinery running, and Uppers, who enjoy more comfort and power under the watchful eye of the Pop Cops. Trella, a girl from the lower levels, survives by keeping her head down, slipping through ducts, and trusting very few people.
In Inside Out, Trella’s quiet routine shatters when a so called prophet claims there is a Gateway to Outside and insists she is the only one who can find evidence of it. Her intimate knowledge of every pipe, ladder, and shortcut makes her the perfect infiltrator, but taking the job means risking execution if the Pop Cops catch her anywhere she does not belong. As she sneaks through forbidden zones and meets Uppers who are not as simple as she thought, Trella uncovers secrets about how Inside is really run and why talk of Outside has been so violently suppressed. By the time the truth starts to surface, simple pranks and covert trips through the ducts have turned into a full rebellion.
The book reads like a claustrophobic science fiction thriller, with tight corridors, ticking clocks, and worldbuilding grounded in air, water, and waste systems that actually have to function.
Outside In picks up after those first upheavals, when Trella is suddenly part of the group trying to rebuild a fairer society inside the same metal cube she once only wanted to escape. Leadership does not come naturally to her, and the lines between friend and rival blur when sabotage and strange new threats begin to appear. Trella and her allies have to figure out whether the danger is coming from discontent inside the levels, something truly from Outside, or both at once. The story pushes her to balance her need for freedom with the responsibilities that come with changing a system.
Across both books, Snyder uses Trella’s sharp, skeptical voice to explore class divides, propaganda, and what it feels like to realize that the rules you have lived under your entire life were built on half-truths. There is action, hacking, and plenty of sneaking through hidden spaces, but also quieter moments where Trella has to decide who to trust and what kind of future she wants for her world. The duology wraps its bigger ideas in a fast moving story that still leaves room for humor and a slow burn romance.
It is a good fit for readers who enjoy science fiction that feels both tense and human, with a mystery box setting that actually pays attention to how the box works.
