The Study Chronicles: Tales of Ixia & Sitia

by Maria V Snyder

2023

The Study Chronicles collects novellas and short stories set in the Ixia and Sitia universe, featuring fan favorites like Yelena, Valek, Opal, Ari, and Janco. It gathers earlier web only tales with new pieces, maps, timelines, and extras that fill in the gaps around the main novels.

Series background & context

The Chronicles of Ixia bring together Maria V. Snyder’s longest running stories in one shared world, where a strict military regime in Ixia borders the magic heavy country of Sitia. Across these books you follow Yelena, once condemned to die, Valek, the commander’s feared spymaster, glass magician Opal Cowan, and a large supporting cast as they navigate poisonings, coups, and the uneasy peace between two very different societies. The tone leans toward character focused epic fantasy, with plenty of romance, friendship, and found family woven through the political intrigue.

Poison Study, Magic Study, and Fire Study start the saga with Yelena dragged from a dungeon and offered a brutal bargain, become the commander’s food taster or hang. Trained to recognize dozens of poisons and kept in check by a daily antidote, she learns to survive at court while old enemies hunt her and rebels scheme to topple the new order. As the series moves south into Sitia, Yelena confronts the family she barely remembers, begins training her unpredictable magic, and is pulled into battles over forbidden blood magic and claims to Ixia’s lost throne.

The later Soulfinder books, Shadow Study, Night Study, and Dawn Study, pick up years later, when Yelena’s power and relationships are tested by assassination attempts, blocked magic, and plots that threaten both countries at once.

Running alongside Yelena’s story is the Glass trilogy, starting with Storm Glass and continuing through Sea Glass and Spy Glass. These novels shift the focus to Opal Cowan, a glassmaker whose fragile creations can hold and channel magic. As Opal works with Stormdancers, magicians who harvest energy from violent weather, she uncovers sabotage, political manipulation, and the personal cost of becoming a key player in high stakes conflicts. Her journey lets readers see new corners of Sitia while still crossing paths with familiar faces from the earlier books.

Shorter works deepen the world even further. Stories and novellas collected in The Study Chronicles: Tales of Ixia & Sitia fill in quiet moments between the big battles, follow side characters on their own missions, and show what happens at key turning points that the main novels only mention in passing. Companion novels in Valek’s point of view, including The Study of Poisons, The Study of Magic, The Study of Fire, and the novella The Study of Storms and Magic, retell major events from the assassin’s perspective and explore his life when he is away from Yelena.

Together, these books reward readers who like to sink into one fantasy setting and watch it grow more complicated with every story.

Expect a mix of tense action, court maneuvering, slow earned trust, and recurring jokes between long time friends. The Chronicles of Ixia can be read in simple publication order or by the combined reading order that threads the Study, Glass, Valek, and short fiction pieces into one sweeping arc, letting you watch the world change as each character’s choices ripple outward.
