Series background & context
Innocence is one of Koontz’s more fable-like thrillers: romantic, strange, and built around the question of what people see when they look at you. Addison Goodheart has lived in isolation for years because his face provokes terror on sight. He believes he’s doing the world a favor by staying hidden.
That changes when he meets Gwyneth, a young woman with danger on her heels and her own complicated past. Their connection is immediate, but it also puts them both at risk. As they move through cities and safe houses, Addison has to decide whether he can be seen—and whether being seen is worth the cost.
The book keeps its suspense engine running, but its heart is in the outsider story: two people trying to build trust in a world that judges fast and punishes hard.
It’s creepy, but it’s also tender.
If you want a companion read, the short story Wilderness is often paired with Innocence and echoes its themes of isolation, kindness, and stepping into the world when you’re not ready.
