Ink & Sigil Books in Order

Ink & Sigil takes place in the same larger universe as the Iron Druid books, but it has its own engine. Instead of following Atticus O'Sullivan through Arizona and mythological warfare, the series centers on Al MacBharrais, a Glasgow sigil agent whose magic works through enchanted ink and carefully made marks on paper. He keeps order among the gods, monsters, and other hidden beings living in the human world, which would already be enough to manage even without the curse ruining his personal life.

That curse is the key to the whole series.

Anyone who hears Al speak begins to hate him, so he relies on writing, text-to-speech apps, and a lot of patience just to get through everyday conversations. On top of that, his apprentices keep dying in bizarre accidents. So from the start, these books are doing two things at once. They are supernatural case files, and they are one long attempt to figure out who cursed Al and why.

The first novel, Ink & Sigil, opens with the death of Al's latest apprentice, Gordie, and pushes him into the hidden criminal world of magical Glasgow. From there, Paper & Blood expands the scope by sending Al to Australia to investigate a missing fellow agent under increasingly ugly circumstances. Candle & Crow pulls the personal mystery into the center, as Al finally chases answers about the pair of curses hanging over his head. The trilogy keeps moving outward in geography while also getting more intimate.

Al is a great lead because he is competent, tired, funny, and deeply lonely without becoming self-pitying. Around him, Hearne builds a strong support cast. Nadia brings sharp edges and real backbone. Buck Foi the hobgoblin is a chaos agent in the best sense. Old Iron Druid readers will also spot familiar faces and the occasional very good dog, but the crossover material works more like seasoning than homework.

The Glasgow setting gives the books a different texture from Iron Druid. These stories feel grubbier, more detective-shaped, and more rooted in pubs, flats, paperwork, and neighborhood secrets. The magic is still loud when it needs to be, but the mystery structure keeps things grounded. Hearne is clearly enjoying the chance to write a hidden-world fantasy that solves problems with ink, contacts, and stubborn investigation instead of only brute force.

If Iron Druid is the bigger mythology roller coaster, Ink & Sigil is the slyer cousin with a notebook in one pocket and trouble in the other. Expect banter, monsters, curses, and a satisfying central mystery that threads through all three books.
