Sweet Saturdays

by Pamela M Kelley

2018

Marketing professional Paula O'Neil is thrilled to take over her aunt's beloved bakery in Indigo Bay, only to discover her charming neighbor Quinn is opening a competing chain shop across the street. Their growing feelings clash with a looming business showdown.

Series background & context

Indigo Bay Sweet Romance is a shared world series set in a charming coastal town in South Carolina, where different authors contribute standalone, interconnected love stories. Pamela M Kelley’s contribution, Sweet Saturdays, brings her trademark blend of small town warmth, food, and gentle conflict to this southern beach setting.

The series as a whole introduces readers to Indigo Bay's boardwalks, local businesses, and tight knit community. Characters move in and out of one another's stories, attending the same festivals, visiting the same shops, and sharing gossip over coffee or ice cream. Each book focuses on a different couple, but together they create a mosaic of life in a town where the ocean is never far away.

In Sweet Saturdays, Paula O'Neil works long hours at a marketing agency but lives for Saturdays, when she helps out at her aunt's bakery, The Sweet Shop. When her aunt decides to retire and offers Paula the chance to take over the business, it feels like a dream come true. The only cloud on the horizon is a new bakery opening right across the street.

That new competition is run by Quinn Jacobs, Paula's attractive new neighbor, who is in town to launch the next location in his family's nationwide bakery chain. The two are drawn to each other even as they stand on opposite sides of a looming business rivalry. Quinn delays telling Paula exactly why he is in Indigo Bay, and that omission raises the stakes when the truth comes out.

Kelley's story fits comfortably within the Indigo Bay universe while reflecting her own interests: strong heroines considering big career shifts, heroes who are decent men trying to do the right thing, and communities where neighbors notice when someone seems a little lonely. The romance is sweet and closed door, with much of the tension coming from questions of trust, ambition, and whether love can survive competing goals.

Readers can pick up Sweet Saturdays on its own or read it as part of a larger Indigo Bay binge, knowing they'll encounter familiar faces and recurring landmarks along the way.
