Series background & context

In Her Name is Michael Hicks's big science fiction saga, but it does not read like cold, mechanical space opera. It mixes interstellar war with prophecy, alien religion, forbidden love, and coming-of-age drama. The central conflict is a long struggle between humanity and the Kreelan Empire, a powerful alien civilization whose warrior culture gives the books a fantasy flavor even when the setting is full of ships, planets, and military campaigns.

The series is built in three connected strands. The Last War shows humanity's first contact with the Kreelans and the opening shock of invasion. Redemption jumps ahead and follows the war toward its later, more personal stages through Reza Gard and the people around him. The First Empress reaches far back into Kreelan history to show how that empire was formed in the first place. They all speak to one another, which is why readers often enjoy following the recommended reading order instead of treating them as separate shelves.

At the center of the broader saga is the question of whether two enemies can ever see each other clearly. Human characters enter the story expecting monsters. Kreelan characters often begin by treating humans as lesser beings. Hicks gets a lot of mileage out of that tension. The books keep asking what honor means, what loyalty costs, and whether love or empathy can survive inside systems built for war.

Reza Gard becomes one of the saga's key figures, but he is hardly the only important voice. Tesh-Dar, Esah-Zhurah, Wiley Hickock, Ichiro Sato, and Keel-Tath all help widen the story's scope. Some books feel like military adventure, some like survival fiction, and some lean closer to epic fantasy in space. Across all of them, the Kreelans are more than a generic enemy race. Their beliefs, rituals, and internal divisions are a huge part of what makes the series work.

It gets big fast.

What ties the whole thing together is momentum. Battles matter, but so do personal bonds, especially when those bonds cut across the war itself. The books move from survey ships and colony worlds to temple compounds, homeworld politics, and old prophecies that refuse to stay buried. If you like series where the world gets deeper as you go, this one has plenty to dig into.

Expect action, emotion, and a lot of moral friction. In Her Name is for readers who want military science fiction with heart, alien cultures that feel fully lived in, and a long arc that keeps widening without losing sight of the people caught inside it.
