Series background & context
The Imperfect Love series is a good example of how broad Nikki Ash's romance world can get while still feeling recognizably hers. On paper, these books jump around, football players, escorts, single dads, tattoo artists, age-gap tension, but the emotional thread is clear. They are all about people carrying old damage and trying to decide whether love is worth the risk anyway.
The early books lean into sports romance. The Pickup starts with a one-night connection and the fallout that comes after. Going Deep brings in football and an escort heroine, with a hero who is used to chasing what he wants. On the Surface shifts toward second chances and the gap between the polished version of a life and the truth underneath it.
Then the series opens up.
By the time you get to Through His Eyes, Finding Our Tomorrow, and Exposed Ink, the tattoo-shop side of the world becomes more important. Forbidden Ink is one of the series anchors, and it helps tie together characters who are trying to heal from abuse, loss, shame, or grief. These later books still have plenty of heat, but they also slow down enough to let the tenderness land.
That mix is what makes the series feel so readable. Nikki Ash is not chasing one single tone here. Some books are sweeter. Some are rougher around the edges. Some have a sports-romance push, while others feel more domestic and intimate.
