Series background & context

The Immortal Guardians books take place in a modern world where most people have no idea vampires are real. Duvall's twist is that her vampires are not glamorous rulers of the night. They are infected, unstable predators, and the Immortal Guardians exist to hunt them down before humans become prey. The guardians themselves are powerful, long-lived protectors with unusual gifts, and they work alongside a hidden network of human allies who help them keep the war out of public view.

That gives the series a strong urban fantasy backbone.

Each main novel follows a different couple, so you get a fresh romance every time, but the cast keeps carrying forward. Darkness Dawns opens the door with Roland and Sarah. From there the spotlight shifts to other immortals, gifted humans, doctors, Seconds, and later even a vampire ally, so the world steadily gets richer without losing the emotional focus of each book. Seth, the quiet and powerful leader, anchors much of the larger story, while the rest of the group bring plenty of teasing, loyalty, and chaos.

The setting moves from safe houses and suburban neighborhoods to secret compounds, research spaces, and battle zones. What keeps it feeling grounded is the mix of danger and domesticity. One scene may involve a brutal fight with vampires, and the next may be full of jokes, awkward attraction, or friends needling each other like family. Duvall clearly likes writing competent people who back each other up, and that sense of teamwork runs through the whole series.

The books also build an ongoing conflict in the background. Enemies evolve. Old threats return in new forms. The danger widens from isolated hunts to organized attacks on the guardians, the humans who protect them, and the people they love. Novellas like In Still Darkness and Phantom Embrace fill in side stories, while Cliff's Descent and Rogue Darkness show how far the world can stretch without losing its core tone. Even An Immortal Guardians Companion leans into that larger sense of community, offering deleted scenes, short pieces, and character extras for readers who are not ready to leave.

It never stops being about the people.

If you like paranormal romance with strong couples, a continuing ensemble cast, and enough banter to lighten the bloodshed, Immortal Guardians is easy to sink into. The books can work one by one, but they are even better when read in order because the friendships, rivalries, and long-running threats keep building. It is also the center of Duvall's broader universe, with The Gifted Ones reaching into the past and Aldebarian Alliance carrying the story far beyond Earth.
