The Death of the Necromancer
by Martha Wells
1998

His plans are upended when signs point to the return of a legendary necromancer, forcing Nicolas and his mismatched allies to confront something far older than politics.
The Element of Fire
by Martha Wells
1993
In the kingdom of Ile Rien, Captain Thomas Boniface guards a sharp tongued dowager queen while scheming courtiers and a ruthless sorcerer plot around them. When the king's half fay sister Kade returns to court, old bargains with the Fay begin to unravel and Thomas has to separate ally from enemy.
Series background & context
The Ile Rien books share a single setting, a small but powerful kingdom whose history stretches from baroque, courtly intrigue to early industrial war. Across different eras and casts, the series shows how one place changes under pressure from magic, technology, and outside invasion.
The Element of Fire introduces Ile Rien in an earlier age, when candlelit palaces, sorcerous wards, and an uneasy truce with the Fay are part of daily life. Captain Thomas Boniface, who commands the Queen's Guard, and Kade Carrion, a half human sorceress with divided loyalties, navigate plots that threaten both the royal family and the fragile balance between mortal and otherworldly powers.
The Death of the Necromancer jumps forward to a gaslit version of the same country. The focus shifts to Nicolas Valiarde, a criminal mastermind building an underground empire for reasons that turn out to be deeply personal. His carefully planned revenge on a powerful noble is derailed when evidence suggests that a long dead necromancer may be active again in the shadows of Vienne.
The later Fall of Ile Rien trilogy, covered on its own page, pushes the setting into full scale war and introduces portal voyages to other worlds, but it is rooted in the history and characters established here. Shorter works collected in Between Worlds fill in side stories about Kade, Nicolas, and the god touched warriors of Cineth, giving the overall sequence a sense of layered history.
Together these books make Ile Rien feel like a real place that ages, reforms its government, and evolves its technology over time. Readers who like intricate city settings, sharp dialogue, and the blend of mystery, adventure, and sorcery will find plenty to explore here.
