Series background & context
The Fall of Ile Rien trilogy begins when this once confident kingdom has already lost most of a war it does not understand. A mysterious enemy called the Gardier attacks in black airships, shatters cities with explosives and magic, and traps Ile Rien's greatest sorcerers behind an impenetrable barrier.
In The Wizard Hunters Tremaine Valiarde, the cynical daughter of Nicolas from The Death of the Necromancer, is pulled from her quiet, depressed life into a desperate experiment. A small group uses an unstable magical sphere to jump their captured ship between worlds, hoping to find allies or a weakness in the Gardier's power. Instead they land in a rougher, sword and sorcery land and meet Ilias and Giliead, warriors with very different ideas about gods and magic.
The Ships of Air turns the conflict into an uneasy partnership. The Rienish refugees and their new allies sail across dangerous seas in an armed liner turned troop ship, trying to track Gardier bases and avoid political pitfalls at home and abroad. Tremaine, who never wanted to be a hero, finds herself making decisions that could save or doom both worlds.
In The Gate of Gods the threads finally converge. The characters race to free the besieged wizards of Lodun, understand the Gardier's true nature, and close the door on a war that has already cost far too much. The stakes are global, but the books keep circling back to small, stubborn acts of bravery, loyalty, and kindness.
The trilogy blends secondary world war story, portal fantasy, and character driven drama. It rewards reading after the earlier Ile Rien novels but is written clearly enough that you can start here if what you want most is high tension adventure with a strong found family at its core.
