Series background & context
The Hypernaturals is Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's science-fiction superhero series set in a future where humanity has spread across the galaxy. Its celebrated super-team helps preserve the security on which that civilization depends. When the active Hypernaturals mysteriously disappear, the people left behind have to respond before they understand what has happened. Retired heroes and inexperienced recruits become the emergency answer to a crisis the established team can no longer handle for them.
The opening volume places that disappearance at the center of a larger mystery. A society used to relying on its champions suddenly has reason to doubt whether those champions can be found or replaced. Former members return to action alongside newcomers, bringing different levels of knowledge and confidence to the same task. Experience is valuable, but being called back doesn't mean a veteran has remained unchanged since the last time the galaxy needed them.
The replacement team isn't ready to feel like a replacement.
Among the returning figures are the brilliant Thinkwell, speedster Bewilder and Hatch Groman, formerly Clone45. Newer heroes include Strangelet and a wearer of the Halfshell armor. The mixture gives the series a contrast between people who remember how the team once worked and people encountering its responsibilities for the first time. Names, identities and inherited roles matter in a world where a heroic position may continue even when the individual occupying it has changed.
The threat is more than the absence of familiar protectors. The team's great enemy is active again, while something still larger may be moving behind the crisis. The investigation draws the heroes toward questions about the Quantinuum and the systems supporting their civilization. Solving the mystery therefore requires more than finding someone strong enough to win a fight. The group needs information about a world whose stability may conceal weaknesses that most people have had no reason to consider.
Across the three collected volumes, the cast works through that combination of immediate danger and a widening puzzle. Their powers offer different ways to act, but the need to cooperate remains central. A clever plan can depend on someone who lacks confidence, while a veteran's assumptions may not fit the threat now facing them. The tone mixes cosmic adventure with a mystery about the society the heroes serve, making the future setting part of the problem rather than simply a place for spectacular battles.
Read the collected volumes from the first through the third. The mystery and the emergency team's relationships develop across the sequence, so the beginning supplies information later chapters rely on. Readers who like superhero groups, unfamiliar futures and veterans working beside novices will find those elements closely connected. The continuing question is whether a society that has lost its expected champions can be protected by people who must discover both the danger and their own working partnership at the same time.
