Author bio
Hugo Huesca was born in Mexico and has lived by the beach for most of his life. He has also been writing for most of it. Long before he published a novel, his school notebooks were packed with stories instead of lesson notes.
Reading came first, but writing arrived early. Huesca has said he wanted to write fiction as a kid, and he kept at it through years of unpublished work in fantasy, mystery, and horror. On his own account, he grew up in a culture that did not really believe a person could make a life as a full-time author. Part of his career has been a quiet argument with that idea.
That long apprenticeship shows up in how wide his interests are. He talks openly about loving science fiction, cyberpunk, horror, fantasy, technothrillers, and historical fiction. He has also pointed to books like Snow Crash, Neuromancer, VALIS, The Dark Tower, and The Name of the Wind as favorites, which helps explain why his own stories tend to mix big concepts with dark corners and a little strangeness.
He does not stay in one lane.
His first published novel, Rune Universe, arrived in 2016 and introduced a lot of what he does well. The setup is pure cyberpunk pulp in the best sense, a hard near future, faceless power, a street-level hero, and a virtual universe that is much more dangerous than it looks. The follow-ups, Cold War Rune and Rune Source, kept building that mix of conspiracy, action, and game-world scale. He later added Rune Zero, a prequel that circles the series from a darker, more mystery-driven angle.
Then came Edge of Conquest, which moved into military adventure, and Dungeon Lord, which became the start of his best known series, The Wraith's Haunt. That run, including Otherwordly Powers, Abominable Creatures, Ancient Traditions, and Nightmare Kingdom, takes a LitRPG premise and gives it a harder, stranger edge. Edward Wright may be a Dungeon Lord in a world of gods, Heroes, and monsters, but the books are just as interested in loyalty, tactics, responsibility, and the cost of holding a home together when every larger power wants a piece of it.
A lot of Huesca's protagonists are not polished heroes. Cole Dorsett is an information thief. Joseph Clarke is a former soldier dragged back into violence. Edward Wright gets handed the kind of role that sounds villainous from the start, then spends book after book trying not to become the thing everyone expects. That is a big part of the appeal. His stories like systems, wars, and high-stakes plots, but they keep coming back to people making messy decisions under pressure.
He also seems to enjoy the odd human detail.
His official bio says he likes to write while looking out at the sea and daydreaming about Lovecraftian horrors. That image feels about right. There is something beachside and calm about the way he talks about writing, and something gleefully dark about the stories themselves. After a long gap between Ancient Traditions and Nightmare Kingdom, he shared that a bicycle accident and a difficult stretch of life slowed his work for years. He later returned, finished the fifth Dungeon Lord novel, and got moving again. These days he still lives by the sea, still writes across fantasy and science fiction, and still sounds like a reader who never quite got over the thrill of a good strange story.
