Jennifer Snow's Housewife Chronicles sits in a different corner of her work than the Alaska and small-town romances, but it still has the same interest in messy relationships and complicated loyalties. These books are suburban mysteries with a strong women's fiction streak, a little romance, and a darkly funny tone. The setup is simple enough to hook you fast: scandal hits an upscale neighborhood, then murder follows, and the women at the center of the mess have to figure out who they can trust.

The humor has teeth.

The first book, Housewife Chronicles, starts with Beth Cartwright at the worst possible moment. Her husband's affair comes to light just before his death, and suddenly she is a widowed single mother stuck in a neighborhood full of polished appearances and whispering judgment. To make matters worse, she is living next door to her husband's mistress, Gina Thompson. That could have stayed catty and shallow. Snow makes it more interesting by letting the women become uneasy allies when Beth ends up under suspicion.

That is the real engine of the series. Not murder on its own, but the strange, funny, sometimes moving alliances that form between women who never expected to need one another. Gina, Beth, and the other housewives are not best friends in the glossy, perfect sense. They are prickly, opinionated, flawed, and often dealing with their own image problems. Which is exactly why the books work.

Housewife Chronicles II shifts the focus to Grace Lee, a bestselling author whose editor dies under suspicious circumstances. Grace dives into research, partly for a book and partly because she cannot help herself, only to find that her curiosity makes her the obvious suspect. Once again the neighborhood women are drawn together, and once again the series gets its momentum from the mix of gossip, friendship, suspicion, and reluctant support.

There is an appealing television energy to these books, which makes sense given the way the series began. Scenes move quickly. Dialogue matters. The mystery is important, but so are the side looks, grudges, and awkward social obligations. Snow clearly enjoys writing a group dynamic where any coffee date can turn into an interrogation, and any favor can become leverage.

If you are coming to this series from Snow's romances, expect something snappier and slightly sharper, but still very readable. The emotional center is female friendship, especially the kind that forms under pressure instead of in ideal conditions. These are stories about reputation, reinvention, and what happens when ordinary women decide they are not going to sit quietly while someone else controls the story. If that sounds fun, Housewife Chronicles is exactly that.
