Hotel Detective Books in Order

The Hotel Detective books are comic mysteries set at the Hotel California, an upscale Southern California resort near San Diego. The central figure is Am Caulfield, an assistant general manager and former surfer who gets pulled into detective work when hotel security becomes his problem too. Am would rather keep things calm, but a big hotel is built for complications.

Its guests bring secrets, grudges, money, and expectations. Its staff bring their own rivalries, mistakes, and emergencies. A missing item can become a public-relations disaster, and a death can threaten the whole operation. That busy setting gives the series room for eccentric visitors, workplace chaos, and a steady stream of odd details before Am gets to the real danger.

In The Hotel Detective, Am inherits the security director's responsibilities after his boss puts him in the job. His first stretch is not gentle. There is a suspicious fall from a balcony, thefts from guest rooms, a vanished batch of pastry-contest entries, and a double murder in room 605. The hotel is also hosting a convention whose members all share the same name, which does not make keeping track of guests any easier.

Am is new to formal sleuthing, but he knows how people behave when they think hotel staff are not paying attention. His work as a manager means he can move through kitchens, offices, guest floors, and public spaces without looking out of place. He solves problems with observation, patience, and a willingness to deal with people who are being unreasonable before breakfast.

The second book, The Fat Innkeeper, keeps Am at the Hotel California under new Japanese ownership. A doctor who investigates fraudulent New Age claims is poisoned while a Union of Near Death Experiences retreat is taking place at the hotel. Am joins reporter Marisa Donnelly in looking into the dead man's past, while also coping with the hotel's new manager, Hiroshi, and another round of staff and guest trouble.

These books are lighter than Russell's later psychological thrillers. The crimes matter, but so do the jokes, the resort atmosphere, Am's laid-back outlook, and the practical headaches of running a luxury hotel. Think of them as classic whodunits with a California beach-town feel and a main character who never stops being a hotel employee, even when he is tracking a killer.

Start with The Hotel Detective, then continue to The Fat Innkeeper. The two books are quick, connected adventures, and the first gives the clearest introduction to Am, the hotel, and the odd little world he is trying to keep under control.
