Series background & context

The Gideon and Sirius books follow LAPD detective Michael Gideon and Sirius, his German shepherd K-9 partner. They work in Los Angeles, where the official cases can be strange, violent, and difficult to explain. Gideon is a capable investigator with a dry sense of humor. Sirius is his working partner, his protector, and often the first one to spot trouble.

The series begins with Burning Man. Gideon and Sirius are recovering from the fire that helped them capture a serial killer known as the Weatherman. Their injuries, and the memories attached to them, stay important as the series moves forward. Instead of getting the robbery-homicide assignment Gideon expects, he and Sirius are placed in the LAPD's Special Cases Unit, where unusual crimes land on their desk.

That gives the books a useful mix of police work and the unsettling unknown. In Burning Man, the pair investigate the killing of a young man found crucified in a park. Guardians of the Night brings together a missing school shooting hero and a homeless man's account of something impossible in an alley. The cases may sound odd, but Gideon approaches them as a detective, looking for witnesses, motives, evidence, and the people who benefit from confusion.

Dogs matter here, not just as a gimmick. Sirius has his own instincts and presence, while later books expand the circle around Gideon with rescue dogs and people trying to protect them. In Lost Dog, an injured stray leads Gideon toward a missing woman. Gideon's Rescue connects a dogfighting investigation with a new serial killer and brings a badly abused pit bull named Emily into Gideon's life.

The series also carries threats across several books. Gideon's history with the imprisoned Weatherman does not stay buried, and the All-In Killer becomes another danger that presses closer to Gideon, Sirius, and the people around them. L.A. Woman combines the suspicious death of a cult member with that larger serial-killer threat. In The Last Good Dog, the long-running danger becomes impossible for Gideon to ignore.

These are police thrillers with some dark material, particularly violence against people and animals, but the books make room for banter, friendship, recovery, and the everyday work of caring for a dog. Los Angeles is more than a backdrop, with its canyons, neighborhoods, studios, shelters, and competing communities all feeding into the cases.

Start with Burning Man and read in order. Each investigation has its own main mystery, but Gideon's recovery, his relationships, and the recurring killers have much more weight when the books are read as a continuous story.
