Hostage of Empire Books in Order

Hostage of Empire is a three-book court fantasy written under Lilith Saintcrow's S. C. Emmett name. It begins after the empire of Zhaon defeats the kingdom of Khir. To secure peace, a Khir princess is sent to marry the Zhaon crown prince. Her lady-in-waiting, Komor Yala, accompanies her into a palace where two queens, two concubines, and six princes all have reasons to watch the newcomers.

The war has ended, but the danger has moved indoors.

In The Throne of the Five Winds, Yala must protect Princess Mahara while learning the rules of an unfamiliar court. Clothing, ceremony, rank, food, gifts, and marriage all carry political meaning. The emperor's illness turns private rivalries into a succession struggle, and a hidden blade can matter as much as an army. Yala has little official power, so observation and restraint become survival skills.

The series stays close to the women inside the imperial household. Their rooms may appear removed from battle, but they are central to diplomacy and inheritance. Mothers maneuver for sons, servants carry information, and marriages can redirect a kingdom. Yala's grief for Khir and loyalty to Mahara complicate every bond she forms in Zhaon, including attachments that cross the line between enemy and ally.

The Poison Prince begins after the crown princess is assassinated. Tension between Khir and Zhaon rises again, leaving Yala isolated and hungry for revenge. Imperial schemes use her as a pawn, but she has learned enough to move pieces of her own. The question is not only who arranged one death. It is who benefits from renewed war and which prince can survive the contest for power.

In The Bloody Throne, the emperor is dead and the crown prince has fallen to hidden plots. A dangerous brother takes the throne while the court seethes and war approaches. The trilogy's long-built loyalties, romances, grudges, and family strategies come due. Survival requires choices that can preserve one person while condemning another.

Read the books in order. This is slow-burn political fantasy, with close attention to custom, household life, and the consequences of seemingly small acts.
