Author bio

Hope Larson grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, and her work still carries some of that mountain-kid feeling, close to nature, a little dreamy, and very alert to the inner lives of young people. She has written across fantasy, mystery, superhero comics, and realistic coming-of-age stories, but there is usually something familiar running through them: a smart kid or teen trying to make sense of change.

She started college at Rochester Institute of Technology, then transferred to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she earned a BFA in 2004. Soon after that, she began making webcomics and building stories in public, including Salamander Dream, which became her first full-length graphic novel. That early path matters because you can still see it in her books now. She thinks like a cartoonist first, with a strong sense of page rhythm, mood, and what a face can say without much dialogue.

Then the books kept coming.

Early works like Gray Horses, Chiggers, and Mercury showed how comfortable Larson was with adolescence as subject matter. Chiggers turns a summer camp story into a sharp, funny look at shifting friendships and that awful feeling of being left behind. Mercury works on a larger canvas, moving between present-day and nineteenth-century Nova Scotia as two girls from the same family circle around buried secrets, magic, and loss. Even when the stories get strange, they stay emotionally clear.

A major turning point came with A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel. Larson adapted and illustrated Madeleine L'Engle's classic, and the book spent forty-four weeks on the New York Times graphic novel bestseller list. It also won her an Eisner Award. More importantly for readers, it showed that she could take on a beloved book and keep its oddness, tenderness, and scale intact.

Comics gave her plenty of room to roam.

She has moved easily between very different projects. With Rebecca Mock, she wrote the swashbuckling Compass South and Knife's Edge, historical adventures full of twins, pirates, and family treasure. She later teamed with Mock again for Salt Magic, a folk-horror-tinged middle grade story set in Oklahoma after World War I. On another shelf entirely, she wrote Barbara Gordon's Batgirl for DC, bringing a strong character focus to a superhero run that mixed travel, mystery, romance, and Burnside street life.

She is also closely associated with Goldie Vance, the retro mystery series she co-created with artist Brittney Williams. Goldie is a teenage valet at a Florida resort who wants to be the in-house detective, and Larson clearly enjoys giving her one clue, one chase, and one stubborn hunch after another. Later books like All Summer Long, All Together Now, and All My Friends returned to quieter middle school territory, using music, friendship, and awkward change as the main drama. More recently, she has kept exploring contemporary teen life in books like Be That Way and Very Bad at Math.

Larson lives in North Carolina now. Across all those different shelves and age ranges, her stories tend to meet readers in the same place: right at the moment when childhood starts giving way to something bigger, messier, and a lot more interesting.
