Series background & context

Anna J. Stewart's Honor Bound series is romantic suspense rooted in Northern California. The books bring together people who work near the justice system, including detectives, prosecutors, private investigators, doctors, and witnesses who have seen far too much. Each novel has its own central couple and case, but familiar friends and colleagues keep the wider world connected.

The series begins with More Than a Lawman. Crime writer Eden St. Claire has spent years chasing killers, partly because the unsolved murder of a childhood friend still shapes her life. Detective Cole Delaney has known Eden for years and understands both her courage and the risks she takes. Their case opens a longer thread involving the people who were changed by that childhood loss.

That history matters.

In Reunited with the P.I., prosecutor Simone Armstrong must work with Vince Sutton, her former husband and a private investigator, when a key witness disappears. Gone in the Night shifts the focus to child psychologist Allie Hollister and the disappearance of one of her young patients. The early books work best in order because the unresolved past and the close bond between the women carry across them.

Later installments broaden the circle. A detective investigates a witness whose account seems impossible in Guarding His Midnight Witness. An ER doctor is caught in a prison escape in Prison Break Hostage. The PI's Deadly Charade follows Jason Sutton, a newer private investigator trying to prove himself, while Deadly Vegas Escapade takes an amnesiac man and his rescuer into a high-risk search for the truth.

The tone is brisk, tense, and relationship-focused. These are cases with kidnappings, missing people, corrupt motives, old wounds, and dangerous secrets, but the emotional core stays close to trust. Stewart gives her leads room to argue, protect each other, and decide whether they can let someone in.

Start with More Than a Lawman for the fullest version of the shared story. Readers who prefer a later standalone can also begin with Prison Break Hostage or Deadly Vegas Escapade, then return for the earlier cases and the history behind the Suttons and their friends.
