Holy Habits: Worship

by Andrew Roberts

2020

This short devotional guide helps churches and individuals think about worship as a regular way of life, not just a service on Sunday. It offers Bible readings, reflections, prayers, and practical prompts for group use.

Series background & context

Holy Habits is not a story series in the usual sense. There is no detective, no fantasy kingdom, and no cliffhanger ending to chase. Instead, it is a practical Christian discipleship project built around a simple question: what would church life look like if people took the picture in Acts 2:42-47 seriously and tried to live it out together now?

Andrew Roberts developed the idea from that passage in Acts, where the early believers are shown learning, praying, sharing, eating, worshipping, and growing together. From there came the ten Holy Habits, including biblical teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, prayer, worship, serving, sharing resources, gladness and generosity, eating together, and making more disciples. The books are meant to help churches explore those habits one by one, then work out what they might look like in local life.

So the main characters here are really ordinary church communities.

That shapes the tone of the series. These books are practical, gentle, and flexible rather than bossy. They are designed for group discussion, personal reflection, and church use, which is why the range includes handbooks, studies, and short Bible reflection volumes. Holy Habits: Worship fits that pattern well. It treats worship not just as what happens in a service, but as a repeated way of turning attention, gratitude, and daily life toward God.

The setting matters too, even though this is nonfiction. Holy Habits grew out of British church life and ministry experience, with a strong awareness that many congregations are tired of big programs and one-size-fits-all fixes. Roberts's answer is to offer resources that support a journey rather than dictate it. The materials are there to spark ideas, prayer, and conversation, not to force every church into the same mold.

That is what links the series from one booklet to the next. The ongoing arc is not plot, but formation. A church might begin with prayer, worship, or fellowship, then discover that each habit leads into the others. The goal is a shared way of life, not a box-ticking exercise. In that sense, the books work best when read slowly and used, not just finished.

If you are new to the series, it helps to think of it as a toolkit. Start with the core Holy Habits idea if you want the big picture, or pick a focused title like Holy Habits: Worship if one area feels especially alive or especially neglected in your group. What keeps the series appealing is its plainness. It is trying to help churches become more prayerful, more generous, more grounded, and more open to growth, one habit at a time.
