Highland, Georgia takes one of romance's favorite fantasies, the charming Scottish hero, and drops it into a modern small town in the American South. The hook is the town's annual Highland Games, which gives Laura Trentham a playful reason to bring kilts, bagpipes, dancing, and very attractive visitors into everyday Georgia life. The result is lighter and funnier than some of her other series, but it still keeps her usual interest in community, belonging, and second chances.

The first book, A Highlander Walks into a Bar, sets the tone beautifully. Isabel Buchanan is already juggling family and town responsibilities when her mother returns from Scotland with a handsome surprise, and soon Alasdair Blackmoor arrives looking for his uncle. What starts as festival chaos turns into romance, with the Games acting as both backdrop and pressure cooker. The series likes that kind of collision, people who come from very different places and suddenly have to work side by side.

That idea continues in A Highlander in a Pickup, where quiet, disciplined Iain Connors comes to run the Games and finds himself clashing with the lively Anna Maitland. In A Highlander is Coming to Town, the story shifts toward a holiday feel, pairing duty-bound farmer Holt Pierson with Claire Smythe, a Scottish singer using Highland as a hiding place. Each book has its own couple, but the town and the festival keep everything stitched together.

The kilts are not subtle.

What makes the series work is that Highland is not just a gimmick town. It has friendships, local expectations, meddling families, and the kind of public closeness that makes privacy almost impossible. Trentham uses the Scottish connection for humor and romantic fantasy, but she also lets it change the town itself. The Games matter because they give people a tradition to rally around, a reason to gather, and a place for outsiders to become insiders.

Tone matters here. These books are breezier than The Military Wife and more openly comic than Spies and Lovers. Even so, the characters are not weightless. They are trying to decide where home is, what duty means, and whether a life that looks settled is actually the one they want. If you want small-town romance with banter, warmth, and a healthy amount of Scottish charm, Highland, Georgia is the place to start.
