Series background & context

The Higgins & Hawke books spin out of the Ginger Gold world, but they quickly become their own thing. The series shifts to 1930s Boston and pairs two women whose skills fit together beautifully: Dr. Haley Higgins, a newly appointed assistant pathologist at Boston Hospital, and Samantha Hawke, a sharp, determined journalist.

It is a good pairing from the start.

Haley brings medical knowledge, careful observation, and a steadier manner. Samantha brings curiosity, nerve, and the habit of asking questions other people would rather dodge. Put them together and every suspicious death becomes more complicated, and more solvable.

The Boston setting gives the books a different flavor from Ginger's 1920s England. There is still period atmosphere, but it comes through hospitals, newspapers, city streets, taverns, dance spaces, and old landmarks rather than drawing rooms and manor houses. The titles themselves hint at the range, from Death at the Tavern to Death on Tremont Row and Death at King's Chapel.

These are still cozy historical mysteries, but they lean slightly more urban and procedural because of Haley's job and Samantha's reporting. That makes the cases feel brisk and grounded. Evidence matters. Social context matters. So does the friendship between the women at the center.

If Ginger Gold appeals because of her brains and charm, Higgins & Hawke works because of teamwork. It is a series about two capable women learning how much stronger they are together, while a restless city keeps handing them fresh trouble.

For readers who want a connected series with a new setting and a different investigative rhythm, this page is a great next step after Ginger.
