Series background & context

The Hidden Truths series, often recognized by its Lies titles, digs into the secrets people carry and the destructive power of half told stories. Though the books are closely tied to the Nutfield Saga, they form a tight quartet that can be read as its own arc.

Convenient Lies introduces investigative journalist Reagan McAdams, who discovers the man she married in Paris is part of an international crime family. Fleeing with her newborn son, she returns to her childhood home in New Hampshire, planning to grab an inheritance and disappear. Instead she runs straight into Brady, the first boy she ever loved, and into a deadly chase that forces her to decide what she is willing to sacrifice to protect her child.

Twisted Lies shifts the focus to Marisa Vega, a woman hiding in a tiny Mexican village after being accused of stealing millions from a powerful financier. Her quiet life as an adoptive mother shatters when her daughter is kidnapped for ransom. Desperate, she reaches out to Nate Boyle, a reporter still wrestling with trauma from his own kidnapping, and asks him to help solve a mystery that has baffled investigators for years.

Generous Lies follows Garrison Kopp, a former FBI agent whose teenage son has slipped deeper into drugs than he realized. A late night trip to the emergency room becomes a wake up call. Garrison accepts temporary refuge from vacation homeowner Samantha Messenger, only to find that a mysterious package and dangerous enemies have followed them to her lakeside property.

Innocent Lies ties many of the threads together through Kelsey and her son Daniel, the boy Eric finds alone in the wintery woods. Kelsey has survived captivity and abuse and sneaks into Nutfield determined to bring down the man who hurt her. Seeing Eric, her first love, again forces her to reopen old wounds even as they fight to keep Daniel safe.

Across all four novels, the dangerous external plots are braided with questions about identity and faith. Characters wrestle with whether their past defines them, whether they can ever truly outrun evil, and how to trust both God and other people after betrayal. The tone is intense but compassionate, never lingering on darkness for its own sake.

Readers who like series where separate stories steadily build a larger picture of a community and its enemies will find Hidden Truths a satisfying starting point for Patchen's Nutfield world.
