Series background & context
Hidden Springs is Kristine Raymond's historical western romance series set in a fictional Arizona Territory town. The books begin with Here to Stay, when drifting cowboy Sam Mackenzie arrives looking for work and finds both trouble and love at Ryan's Ranch. From there, the series widens out book by book, following the people who settle in town, marry into its families, and keep showing up in one another's lives.
This is a town series, through and through.
Each novel focuses on a different couple, but the larger pleasure comes from watching Hidden Springs grow. Hearts on Fire turns to Marshal Jack Tanner and Landry Prescott. Abby's Heart brings in a young woman from back East who finds herself caught between two very different men. A Chance on Love pairs the town doctor with a widow looking for a fresh start, while A Will of Her Own follows Carly Fitzpatrick and Will Buchanon as danger and attraction collide. Later books keep widening the circle, so by the time you reach Coming Home and Enduring Traditions, the town feels lived-in rather than sketched in. Even when a later book centers on a new romance, familiar faces drift through the background, which makes the setting itself feel like the series anchor.
The setting matters almost as much as the romances. Hidden Springs is a place of ranches, lawmen, schoolteachers, miners, dance halls, and doctors trying to keep up with the needs of a rough frontier community. People work hard, gossip fast, and remember each other's business. The Arizona backdrop gives the books their shape: wide distances, dry heat, uncertain safety, and the constant sense that a new life can still be built if someone is stubborn enough to try.
The tone is warm, but not weightless. These stories deal with widowhood, old heartbreak, illness, violence, rumors, and the practical business of surviving in the late nineteenth-century West. That gives the romances a little grit. Raymond likes characters who have been knocked sideways by life and now have to decide whether they are brave enough to trust someone again. Drifters, single mothers, gamblers, wounded professionals, and people trying to outrun the past all get their turn.
It reads best in order.
That said, the books are designed as complete stories, not cliffhangers. You can pick one based on the couple or setup that grabs you and still get a satisfying ending. Starting with Here to Stay simply lets you watch the friendships, family ties, and everyday life of Hidden Springs build over time, which is where much of the charm lives.
