Series background & context

Hidden Norfolk follows DI Tom Janssen, a quietly observant detective who returns from London to the North Norfolk coast he grew up on, only to find his childhood landscape reshaped by secrets, grudges and sudden violence.

Each book takes place in and around small coastal towns, salt marshes and beaches, where the weather shifts fast and gossip travels even faster. The series leans into classic British police procedural territory—crime scenes, team briefings, forensic leads—but always grounded in a strong sense of place.

The cases are self‑contained, so you can drop into almost any volume and get a complete mystery, but there are ongoing threads. Janssen’s relationships with his team, the strain of working in the town where he once played as a child, and the slow reveal of his own history all build from book to book.

Hidden Norfolk opens with One Lost Soul, where a promising teenager is found murdered on a cliff path at sunrise. Later novels widen the canvas: a storm exposes a long‑buried body in the dunes in Bury Your Past; a mutilated woman is pulled from the sea in Kill Our Sins; an unidentified man lies dead at the foot of Sheringham’s cliffs in Tell No Tales; and the Viking festival at Sheringham turns lethal in Hear No Evil.

As the series progresses, Janssen’s team tackles crimes that touch almost every part of local life: an elderly woman killed at Blakeney Point in The Dead Call, a skeleton unearthed near a Roman fort in Kill Them Cold, a journalist’s death on Roydon Common in A Dark Sin, and a supposedly harmless recluse murdered in To Die For. These plots circle recurring themes—how money, shame, loyalty and old sins are hidden in plain sight within a seemingly quiet community.

Janssen himself is less flashy than many fictional detectives. He listens more than he talks, nudging colleagues like DS Cassie Knight and DCI Tamara Greave to see what they might have missed, and often finds answers in small gestures rather than big reveals. Despite dark subject matter—serial predators, family violence, long‑running feuds—the books leave room for dry humour, ordinary domestic scenes and the rhythms of coastal life.

Read in order, the Hidden Norfolk novels give you a slow‑burn portrait of a detective, his adopted home patch and the people who live there. Read singly, they deliver tightly plotted investigations that start with a striking discovery—a body on a cliff, in the sea or under ancient soil—and work their way methodically toward justice, even when that justice comes at a cost.
