The Rift

by Rachel Lynch

Series background & context

The Helen Scott Royal Military Police novels show a different side of Rachel Lynch's crime writing. Instead of rural Cumbria, these books follow Major Helen Scott, a senior officer in the Royal Military Police, as she is dropped into politically sensitive cases where the military, international policing and private power all collide.

Helen is used to being on the move. Her job takes her from base to base and country to country, acting as a bridge between the armed forces and civilian authorities. She understands the culture of loyalty and secrecy that comes with service life, but she is also stubborn about seeing justice done, even when it means challenging people far above her in the chain of command.

In The Rift, we meet her in Paris, overseeing security for a NATO summit. Before that operation even gets going, she is summoned to Interpol's headquarters in Lyon and handed a new priority: find the kidnapped son of a powerful oil magnate. The hunt pushes her into the world of arms trafficking and dirty money, where every ally might have their own agenda and saving one life could put many others at risk.

The Line takes her to Cyprus and the wreck of the Zenobia, where a British Army captain dies during what should have been a routine dive. On paper it looks like an accident, but the dead man had been investigating four soldiers suspected of leaking state secrets. As Helen picks up his unfinished work, she finds herself navigating island politics, military bureaucracy and a case that could embarrass governments as much as individuals.

Across the series, the tension does not just come from action scenes or gunfire, though there is plenty of danger. Much of the suspense lies in watching Helen decide who she can trust. Old contacts resurface, informal favours are called in and lines blur between official orders and back-channel deals. The books blend procedural detail with the pace of a thriller, offering readers glimpses of operations rooms, embassies and secure compounds as well as city streets and coastlines.

While each novel tells a self-contained story, reading them in order lets you follow Helen's own arc as she carries scars, both literal and emotional, from one posting to the next. Together they sketch a portrait of a woman trying to balance duty, integrity and a private life that is constantly interrupted by the next crisis call. If you enjoy crime fiction with a military edge, international settings and a strong female lead who is not easily intimidated, this series is an easy one to settle into.
