Helen Hoang Books in Order

Helen Hoang was born in Minneapolis and raised in Minnesota before later making her home in Southern California. She is Vietnamese American, and her family history, especially her mother’s journey from Vietnam to the United States, has shaped the people and family dynamics in her fiction.

Romance got to her early. Hoang read her first romance novel in eighth grade and has described herself as hooked on love stories ever since. That long-running reading habit shows up in books that take attraction seriously but also make room for awkwardness, work stress, family pressure, and the hard job of saying what you need.

Before she published a novel, Hoang earned an undergraduate business degree and worked in finance. Her early career gave her a feel for high-achieving characters who are good with numbers, plans, and professional goals, but less certain when feelings do not follow a neat formula.

In 2016, Hoang was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, in line with what was then commonly called Asperger’s syndrome. Learning more about autism helped her make sense of her own experiences, and it opened the door to writing romantic leads whose ways of moving through the world are often misunderstood by others.

That personal shift helped shape her first published novel.

The Kiss Quotient, released in 2018, introduced Stella Lane, an autistic econometrician who hires Michael Phan to help her learn about dating. The book starts with a playful, high-concept setup, then settles into a romance about trust, boundaries, class, and the relief of being understood. It also brought Hoang a wide audience looking for contemporary romance with neurodivergent characters at the center.

She followed it with The Bride Test in 2019. This time, the story follows Khai Diep, an autistic accountant convinced he cannot love, and Esme Tran, a Vietnamese woman offered a chance to spend a summer in California as a possible match for him. Hoang drew on conversations with her mother about poverty, immigration, and the work of building a life in a new country.

Then came The Heart Principle.

Published in 2021, the novel gives violinist Anna Sun and tattooed, motorcycle-riding Quan Diep a much heavier emotional road. Anna is exhausted by career pressure and the expectations around her, while Quan offers care without trying to turn her into someone else. The book keeps the series’ romantic warmth but spends more time with burnout, family responsibility, and the cost of always trying to be agreeable.

Across her books, Hoang returns to capable people who have been told they are too much, too quiet, too difficult, or somehow not enough. Her romances are frank about sex, funny in uncomfortable moments, and attentive to Vietnamese and Vietnamese American family life. She lives in San Diego with her husband, two children, and pet fish.
