Author bio

Heidi Swanson built her career from a very relatable moment. In early 2003, she looked at her cookbook collection, realized she kept cooking the same things, and started 101 Cookbooks as a way to actually use the books she owned. What began as a personal project became her long-running home base, a place to test recipes, share photographs, and work out her own style in public.

It was a kitchen reset that turned into a body of work.

Swanson writes from a California frame of mind. She lived in San Francisco for many years and now lives in Los Angeles, where she has written about finally getting a community garden plot. She travels often, and she has said that California produce, farmers' markets, books, and a vegetarian way of eating all shape the way she cooks.

Her guiding ideas are simple and consistent. She believes in plants, natural foods, home-cooked meals, and the pleasure of sharing a table with people you love. That sounds airy until you look at the recipes, which are grounded, practical, and built for real kitchens. She also does the full job herself, cooking, testing, photographing, and eating the dishes she publishes.

Many readers first meet her through Super Natural Cooking, the book that helped show home cooks how to stock a whole-food pantry without making the whole thing feel like homework. From there, Super Natural Every Day brought that same approach into daily life, with nearly 100 recipes aimed at breakfasts, lunches, snacks, dinners, and small gatherings. That book won a James Beard Award, and it helped cement her reputation as a cook who could make grains, vegetables, and natural ingredients feel inviting rather than worthy.

She kept widening the picture. Near & Far blends vegetarian recipes with photographs and travel notes from places like Japan, Morocco, Italy, France, and India, while still returning to the rhythms of her own kitchen. It later won a James Beard Award for photography. Then Super Natural Simple pushed in the opposite direction, toward streamlined, weeknight-friendly cooking, with minimal ingredients, smart shortcuts, and plenty of flavor.

Through all of it, Swanson has stayed closely tied to the home cook. Her recipes are vegetarian, often vegan, and usually the kind of food people actually want to eat again: soups, salads, noodles, grain bowls, cookies, simple cakes, and hearty mains with a little spark from spices, herbs, or an unexpected pantry ingredient. The look of her work matters too, but the point is never just to be pretty. It is to make good food feel possible.

That balance is a big part of her appeal.

She has become a bestselling cookbook author and a familiar voice in modern vegetable-forward cooking, but her work still feels personal. On her site she writes not just about recipes, but about painting, sewing dresses, camping and cooking along the California coast, and the small details of daily life. Her feisty cocker spaniel, Polly, pops up there too. The result is a body of work that feels calm, curious, and genuinely lived in.
