Author bio

Heidi McLaughlin grew up in the Pacific Northwest and is originally from Portland, Oregon. These days she lives in Vermont with her husband and two daughters. Readers also know there are usually pets somewhere nearby, and that family life still sits close to the center of everything she writes.

Her path to writing started with reading. In interviews, McLaughlin has talked about sharing books with her grandmother when she was young and wanting to become a writer because of the joy she saw on her grandmother's face. That early love stayed with her for years, even before writing became a career.

Then 2012 changed things.

That was the year she turned her passion for reading into a full-time writing life. Early on, she was writing around work and family, building stories at night and finding readers quickly. Her first novel, Forever My Girl, became the foundation for the Beaumont world and set the tone for much of what followed, romance with history, family ties, and people trying to find their way back to each other.

A few books later, that debut had taken on a life of its own. Forever My Girl was adapted into a film released on January 19, 2018, bringing Liam and Josie's story to a wider audience. It is still the book many readers start with, and for good reason. It has the mix McLaughlin returns to often, second chances, strong feelings, and the sense that home can be both the safest and hardest place to land.

She writes in series a lot, and that shape suits her. The Beaumont books, the next-generation stories, The Boys of Summer, The Archer Brothers, and later series like Cape Harbor give her room to follow families, friendships, and ripple effects over time. One couple may lead to another book, then another, until a whole town or friend group feels lived in.

Her stories tend to circle a few favorite worlds. Music shows up often, especially in the Beaumont books and Virtuous Paradox. Sports matter too, from baseball and football to hockey. She also likes small towns, coastal settings, holiday gatherings, and characters who are carrying old hurt while trying to build a good life anyway.

Books like Third Base, After All, Before I'm Gone, and The Art of Starting Over show that range well. Some lean lighter and flirty. Others hit harder, with grief, illness, addiction, fame, or family strain pushing the romance into rougher water. What keeps readers coming back is the same basic promise, emotional stories, familiar connections across books, and people who feel messy in recognizable ways.

She also seems to enjoy stretching into new corners of romance. Alongside the bigger long-running families, she has written reality-show setups, holiday novellas, paranormal stories, and newer mystery-tinged books set in places like Westerly Cove and the French Quarter. Even when the backdrop shifts, the focus stays personal. The stakes matter because the people do.

And when she isn't writing, the picture is pretty down to earth. McLaughlin has said you'll often find her courtside at her daughters' basketball games. That detail fits her books somehow. Big feelings on the page, regular life off it.
