Months of anger, silence, and longing follow as they struggle to figure out whether friendship can survive becoming something more.

Series background & context

Heated Beat is a two‑book mini‑series that brings together music, friendship, and romance. The stories are linked by a shared world of DJs, bands, and music‑mad fans in northern England, and by Leigh’s trademark focus on flawed men learning to trust each other.

My Mate Jack follows Will Barter and Jack, best friends who have grown up side by side. They have shared everything—jokes, teenage disasters, even Will’s first kiss—but Jack has always been straight, and Will has carefully buried a massive crush. As school ends, Will heads to university in Leeds and Jack is on his way to Ibiza for a dream DJ job. A late‑night blurring of lines between them turns their world upside down just as they are about to part ways. The novella explores the fallout over the months that follow: anger, hurt, misunderstandings, and the slow realisation that their friendship might be strong enough to hold something more.

Lucky Man zooms out to tell a different kind of music story. Vice squad detective Danny Jones lives for live gigs, smoky venues, and the catharsis of loud sound. Watching one of the hottest bands in northern England, he is knocked off balance by Finn McGovern, the tattooed rock star on stage. Underneath the leather, Finn is sweet and damaged, carrying a dark secret that tests Danny’s instincts as both cop and lover. When a serial killer targeting sex workers hits too close to home, Danny discovers a painful link between his investigation and his new relationship.

Across both books, music is more than window dressing. Gigs, rehearsals, and club nights provide the rhythm for the characters’ emotional arcs. The series touches on police work, addiction, media scrutiny, and mental health, but always returns to the intimacy of two people figuring out what they mean to each other.

If you like your rock‑star and DJ romances with a strong sense of place, real consequences, and men who screw up but keep trying, Heated Beat is a compact, satisfying read.
