Author bio
Garrett Leigh is a British romance author, cover artist, and book designer who has built a devoted readership with stories that are tender, gritty, and intensely human. She writes mostly queer love stories, often about people who are already carrying heavy loads when the book begins.
She grew up in the UK and gravitated early to creative work, first through art and design, then through stories. By her own account, writing did not arrive in a single lightning-bolt moment. It crept in, became a habit, and then quietly took over until she realised she had a career on her hands as well as a hard drive full of broken, beautiful characters.
Her debut novel, Slide, set the tone for much of what came after. It follows Ash, a tattoo artist with a brutal history, and Pete, the paramedic who loves him, and it went on to win Best Bisexual Debut at the Rainbow Book Awards. That early success was less about hype and more about how clearly readers recognised real lives in Ash and Pete’s struggles with trauma, addiction, and love.
Awards have followed her work ever since, but Leigh tends to let the books speak for themselves. Misfits, the first Urban Soul novel about Tom, Cass, and Jake’s messy, hungry London love story, became a finalist for a major queer fiction prize. Military romance Between Ghosts later picked up an industry award for contemporary romance, while What Remains was recognised for its portrayal of disability, recovery, and the slow work of building a life after catastrophe.
If you dip into her catalogue, certain patterns jump out. Leigh is drawn to characters on the edge of things, whether that is a biker club skirting the criminal underworld, a queer bar in Vermont, a Cornish seaside town, or a kitchen at full tilt in west London. Her Roads series, starting with Slide and Rare, stays close to one couple over years of mental health battles, found family, and the grind of everyday work. The Rebel Kings MC novels ride with a British motorcycle club where love is as fierce as the violence around it, and the Darkest Skies books track ex-gangsters trying to choose love and growth over revenge.
She also writes quieter contemporary romances like Lucky, Rented Heart, and Kiss Me Again, where the drama comes from grief, chronic illness, or financial pressure as much as from external villains. Across all of them, you will find working kitchens, tattoos, animals underfoot, and people who swear a lot but struggle to say "I love you" out loud.
Leigh’s creative life is not limited to words. She is an award-winning cover designer who has taken home a silver medal at a major book design award. Through her design studio and a specialist stock-photography venture she co-owns with photographer Dan Burgess, she builds the visual identities of other authors’ books as carefully as she shapes her own.
Away from the screen, she talks openly about being a world-class procrastinator. Social media, a noisy household, and a menagerie of pets all compete for her attention. She is also a trained chef, and readers who notice the vivid kitchen scenes in books like Strays are not imagining it; many of those recipes have been cooked for her family more than once.
These days, Leigh splits her time between drafting new stories, designing covers, and adding bonus scenes and “missing moments” for readers who are not ready to leave certain characters behind. Whether the book is a dark biker romance, a small-town Christmas story, or a paranormal war between wolves and vampires, she keeps coming back to the same core questions: how people survive, how they make homes in each other, and what it costs to let yourself be loved.
