Series background & context

The Hearts of Montana series is built around fresh starts in Broken Falls, Montana, especially around the farm called Tucked Away. These books are a little more emotional than some of Marts's lighter rom-com work, but they still keep her easy style and her affection for small towns, stubborn people, and second chances.

The first book, Tucked Away, introduces Charlie Ryan, a city woman who inherits a farm from a grandmother she never knew, along with local veterinarian Zack Cooper and a whole new life she never planned on. Hidden Away turns to diner owner Cherry Hill, who suddenly becomes guardian to her young nephew and finds herself leaning on sheriff Taylor Johnson, the man who once broke her heart. Stolen Away follows Emma Frank as she comes home after escaping a terrible marriage and slowly begins to trust cowboy Cash Walker.

Starting over is the real engine of this series.

The ranch and the town are both important because they give the characters space to rebuild. These are not books about glamorous reinvention. They are about everyday work, animals that need tending, legal problems, family wounds, inherited property, custody fights, and people learning how to ask for help. The love stories matter, but so do the quieter questions underneath them, especially around belonging and safety.

Broken Falls has the kind of small-town web Marts writes well. Friends overlap, side characters reappear, and the setting feels useful rather than decorative. It is a place where a person can come apart in public and still find someone willing to help pick up the pieces. That warmth keeps the series inviting even when it touches harder subjects like abandonment, grief, and abuse.

If you like western romance with more heartache in the mix, but still want kindness, humor, and a dependable happy ending, Hearts of Montana hits that balance well.
