Author bio
Jennie Marts was born in Manhattan, Kansas, and grew up in Washington, a small town that helped shape her feel for tight communities, practical humor, and people who all know one another's business. That sense of place runs through her work, whether she's writing about ranch towns, mountain communities, or a book club that keeps stumbling over dead bodies.
She's a Kansas farm girl at heart.
Marts has said she wrote all her life, stories, journals, poetry, even bad song lyrics, but she did not begin her official writing career until she turned 40. That late start matters because her books often feel written by someone who knows ordinary adult life, messy schedules, second chances, and how funny people can be when they are trying hard to hold things together.
Her early Page Turners books put a clear stamp on what she does best. Another Saturday Night and I Ain't Got No Body mixes blind dates, friendship, mystery, and romance in a way that feels light on its feet, and later entries like Easy Like Sunday Mourning and What To Do About Wednesday keep that same blend of warmth and trouble.
A lot of readers first meet her through the cowboy romances. In Caught Up in a Cowboy, You Had Me at Cowboy, and It Started with a Cowboy, she pairs small-town Colorado ranch life with hockey backgrounds, second chances, and characters who talk tough but fall hard. The later Creedence Horse Rescue books, including A Cowboy State of Mind and When a Cowboy Loves a Woman, lean even more into animals, healing, and found family.
Animals matter in her books, and not just as window dressing.
You can see that especially in Take the Honey and Run, the start of her Bee Keeping Mystery series, where a mystery author comes home to a Colorado honey ranch and finds murder waiting. Even when Marts shifts genre, the appeal stays familiar: strong friendships, quirky side characters, a grounded romantic thread, and communities that feel lived in rather than staged.
She has also written warm, feel-good standalone romances such as Rescuing Harmony Ranch and Cowboy Ever After, both built around people returning to places that still hold unfinished feelings. Again and again, her stories come back to the same questions: What makes a home? Who shows up when life goes sideways? And how do people learn to trust love after disappointment, grief, or plain old bad timing?
These days Marts lives in the mountains of Colorado with her husband, two dogs, and a parakeet that, by her own account, likes oldies. Her official bio also mentions two other constants, Diet Coke and Cheetos, which tells you something useful about her public voice: she doesn't present herself like a distant literary monument. She comes across like someone who would happily chat about books, snacks, and small-town gossip.
That fits the fiction. Her novels move across romance, cozy mystery, and romantic comedy, but the through line is easy to spot. She likes laughter, heart, and hard-won happy endings, and she tends to find them in places full of neighbors, animals, and people getting one more chance to get life right.
