Series background & context
Haunted Souls combines romance between men with supernatural investigations in Salem, Massachusetts. Pandora Pine builds the series around private investigator Jude Byrne and psychic Copeland Forbes, usually called Cope. Their work brings them into contact with people whose problems cannot be explained by ordinary evidence alone. The relationship between the investigators matters alongside the hauntings, giving the books an ongoing personal story as well as individual cases.
For these partners, understanding the dead begins with learning to trust someone living.
The opening novel, Ghost of Himself, introduces two men carrying difficult histories. Jude has settled in Salem while trying to leave secrets from his earlier life behind him. Cope arrives from Louisiana after an attack by a former student has shaken his abilities and confidence. He seeks Jude's help, but the threat facing them calls for more than one man's skills. Dark magic turns their first encounter into a dangerous test of whether they can work together.
That starting point establishes a partnership built from different kinds of knowledge. Jude can investigate a location and uncover its history, while Cope can make contact with spirits. Neither approach replaces the other. The supernatural may be real in this world, but finding out who a ghost was and what it wants still takes patient inquiry. Salem gives the series a setting where the history of a place can become an immediate problem for its present occupants.
In Ghost Story, the pair are working as ghost detectives. Some spirits may be persuaded to share a home peacefully or move on, but their next client presents a much less comfortable situation. Teenager Xavier Lewis asks for help with a threatening woman in white. The case tests the assumption that communication will always make a haunting manageable. At the same time, Jude and Cope's attraction raises questions about how far their professional partnership can extend into their private lives.
The books offer a continuing couple rather than a fresh central romance in every installment, so reading from the beginning gives their changing bond more weight. Start with Ghost of Himself, followed by Ghost Story, Ghost Town, and Ghost House. The appeal lies in the combination of an investigative routine, unsettling encounters, and two people learning what they can depend on in each other. Readers can expect paranormal mystery with romantic development threaded through the cases. The ghosts bring immediate uncertainty, while Jude and Cope's shared history gives the longer series its emotional continuity and makes their next investigation feel connected to the ones before it.
